Otago Golf Club

Set high above Dunedin with sweeping views across the city and harbour, the Otago Golf Club is one of New Zealand’s most storied and distinctive golfing venues. Established in 1871, it is the oldest golf club in the Southern Hemisphere — a heritage we honour not through nostalgia, but through an ongoing commitment to quality, presentation and experience.

Balmacewen is a course of character and subtle challenge. Shaped by natural elevation and framed by mature trees, it rewards thoughtful shot-making and strategic play rather than brute force. Firm, true greens and defined fairways create a layout that is both engaging for the low marker and welcoming to the everyday golfer. It is a course you can enjoy on first play — and appreciate more deeply with every round thereafter.

Beyond the fairways, the Club offers a warm and professional environment where members and guests feel equally at ease. Our clubhouse provides a relaxed yet refined setting to gather, dine and connect, with attentive service and a strong sense of community at its core. Whether it’s a casual post-round drink, a hosted event, or a competitive fixture on the calendar, the experience is consistently considered and well delivered.

At Otago Golf Club, tradition and progress sit comfortably side by side. We are proud of where we have come from, confident in where we are heading, and committed to providing a golf and hospitality experience that reflects the very best of the game.

The spirit and enthusiasm of our members is one of our best attributes. For our members golf is about great company, good friends and maybe a small haggle. It is their club and could be your club.

The Otago Golf Club are the oldest golf club in the Southern Hemisphere. Founded in 1871 as the Dunedin Golf Club (later Otago Golf Club) by “father of New Zealand golf” Scottish businessman Charles Howden, moved from 9-hole course at Mornington to present 18-hole Balmacewen course in 1896.

The Otago Golf Club hosted the first Amateur Championship of New Zealand 1893; nine further national amateur championships since; hosted seven New Zealand Open

Our Par 71, 5972 metre championship course is set beside undulating native bush with iconic city and harbour views; rated among best and most challenging courses in New Zealand. NZCR 71.50. Slope rating 136. (Blue tee course 5719 metres; white tee course 5452 metres.)

Be assured that a warm welcome and a true golfing experience awaits you.
